What is FMT?

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is an innovative investigational treatment that has – in randomized, controlled clinical trials – resolved 80-90% of infections caused by recurrent C. difficile that does not respond to antibiotics. During FMT, a fecal preparation from a carefully screened, healthy stool donor is instilled into the colon of the patient. There are multiple routes of administration (e.g., via colonoscopy or capsules), each of which has unique risks and benefits. In the US, this therapy is not FDA approved for any indication but under a policy from the FDA we can offer this for patients with C. difficile infection not responding to standard therapy. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Allegretti Lab has continued to offer this therapy to patients in need.
